The Burning Crusade Instances Guide - Coilfang Reservoir

The Slave Pens, The Underbog, The Steamvault, Serpentshrine Cavern - four instances ranging from lvl 60 up to lvl 70 end-game.

Basic overview and location

Home of nagas and namely Lady Vashj. It's located underground below larges lake in Zangarmarsh (Outland) and available only by swimming through long tunnel (no water breathing required). It has 4 wings - 5man wings is doable in under one 1 hour and monsters should evolve around player levels.

  • The Slave Pens, mobs 62-64, 5 player
  • The Underbog, mobs 63-65, 5 player
  • The Steamvault, mobs 70-72, 5 player
  • Serpentshrine Cavern, 25 player raid

When standing on front of instance entrances (taken you just jumpes out of water), the order is :

Slave Pens  - SteamVault - SerpentshireCavern (largest) - Underbog

Quest for CFR instances are given by Cenarion Expedition and Sporeggar (where you get them only after you hit Friendly with them).

Most of the info is taken from www.wowwiki.com and bc.worldofwar.net Some texts (from BC) are my contribution, other texts are contribution of other volunteers of WorldOfWar BC Wiki and WoWWiki.

The Slave Pens, mobs 62-64, 5 player

Mennu the Betrayer

Level 64 Elite, Humanoid

Spells and Abilities

Throughout the fight, Mennu will occasionally toss down totems which need to be taken out as soon as possible. These totems include a Healing Totem, a Fire Nova Totem, Corrupted Earthgrab Totem, and a Stoneskin totem. He also does a very high damage lightning bolt. You should drain his mana so he cannot throw his totems so often. This is an endurance fight, as he has lots of hitpoints. Try to conserve mana.

Rokmar the Crackler

Level 64 Elite, Humanoid

Attacks and Abilities

Rokmar will place a debuff on his target (hopefully the Main Tank) causing the target to bleed for 900 physical damage every 2 seconds until the player with the debuff has been healed to full HP. He will also occasionally do a Aqua Shot volley, hitting everybody within a certain (less than 41 yard) radius for around 1600-1800 frost damage. It is possible to reset him by jumping into the water directly next to him.

The debuff can be cured by Stoneform (Dwarf racial)
The debuff will last FOREVER, including after the boss is dead, until you are dead / cured.

Quagmirran

Level 64 Elite, Elemental

Attacks and Abilities

He is a fairly straight forward tanking fight. Although he does a 2.5-2.6k Nature AoE that has a DoT effect that needs to be dispelled. For this reason, bringing a class that can remove Poison is key. His normal melee is fairly powerful, so watch out for that.

When he does his poison AoE, he stands still so the tank can walk through Quagmirran to avoid the damage from the Geyser. When he finishes, the tank can just turn him around again. If you can keep him facing away from the group, you only need to worry about the Poison DoT and his normal melee damage.

Prior to engaging this boss remember to unlock and free the Night Elf in the cage in the room you are in. After freeing him you can talk to him and he will buff you with a 30 minute "Mark of the Bite" which grants you 110 Nature Resistance. This will help with the Poison DoT and his AoE as they both are Nature based.

The Underbog, mobs 63-65, 5 player

Hungarfen

Level 65 Elite, Elemental

Attacks and Abilities

Underbog Mushrooms: Hungarfen spawns these mushrooms at random locations in the area. They take a few moments to grow, and then explode releasing a Spore Cloud. They continuously spawn around the room through out the fight.

Spore Cloud: An AoE DoT that pulses from the Underbog Mushrooms. Inflicts 360 to 540 Nature damage every 2 seconds for 20 seconds. Stacks up to 5 times.

Foul Spores: Roots himself and projects an AoE poison cloud which hits for between 400 and 600 damage every second. Hungarfen is then healed for 4x the damage done. 15 yard radius.

Strategies

All party members must keep an eye out for Underbog Mushrooms and move away from them, including the tank!!! For the first 80% this is a basic tank and spank fight, With the exception that the tank must move Hungarfen around to avoid the Underbog Mushrooms. The Mushrooms will spawn through out the fight, make sure to stay alert and move when one is near you. When he hits 20% he will begin using Foul Spores. ALL party members, including the tank, should move away from Hungarfen so no one takes damage from the AoE, and he doesn't heal himself. Burn him down as much as possilbe, at roughly 10% or after a certain time, he releases from Foul Spores. Usually runs right to the tank, just continue to avoid the Underbog Mushrooms until he is dead.

NOTE: Key to this fight is avoiding the Underbog Mushrooms.

NOTE: The two Bog Giants aren't linked to the boss in any way, it's very recommended to pull them seperately. However they are linked together, so be prepared for a double tank or someone to off tank the added one. You can also treat one of them the same as drek in UBRS, where a hunter or frost mage kites one of the Bog Giants away from the party (jumping off the cliff forces the giant to take the long road to follow you). They move very slowly and are easy to kite as long as you produce enough aggro at the beginning with a fireball/distracting shot to compensate for healing on the first one. After the first giant is killed either use iceblock or feign death to have him go back to the group.

Overseer Tidewrath

Level 65 Elite, Humanoid

When you reach the top of the staircase and are able to see him, Ghaz'an starts climbing up the platforms to go and eat the Overseer. If you can reach him in time and kill him yourself instead of Ghaz'an, you will be rewarded with nice loot. Ghaz'an can always be killed afterwards.

As of 2 runs on normal mode 20/01/07, this mob was not seen at all during the instance, says WoWWiki.com

Ghaz'an

Level 65 Elite, Beast

Attacks and Abilities

Acid Spit: 180° frontal 2k nature damage attack.
Acid Breath: 155 nature damage over 3seconds stacks on MT. Stacks up to 10 times.
Tail Whip: 500 damage behind Ghaz'an.

Have the tank draw initial aggro from the bridge leading up to the platform where Ghaz'an stands and tank him on that bridge away from the group. Point him so his side faces the platform, that way nobody gets hit with the tail swipe and only the tank eats most of the breaths. I dont know if there is any way to completely avoid the spit, as standing close to him or at max range both produce similar results. This is best place to tank him is to send the tank into the circlular pedestal he is on and tank him perpendicular to the group remaining on the ramp. This will keep the group out of the 180 degree radius of the spit, and keep the tail not facing the group of ranged dps/healers.

The rest of the party runs around/through Ghaz'an to the platform and burns him down from the maximum range possible. Having 2 healers helps for the people who get spit on and the MT at the end when the debuffs start to stack high. Not having two healers means that people who get spit on need to bandage and will probably require a health potion to survive. Ghaz'an tends to repeatedly spit the same person over and over again and only choses a new target once that person dies.

Swamplord Musel'ek

Level 65 Elite, Humanoid

Attacks and Abilities
Aimed Shot: Musel'ek will use this ability when he isn't properly tanked in melee range. It easily hits for over 2000 damage on cloth classes.
Auto Shot: Like any hunter, Musel'ek also fires Auto Shots. These hit for far less than his Aimed Shot.
AOE Frost Trap: From time to time Musel'ek will freeze the whole party for a few seconds and take distance, is resistable.
Multi-Shot: Hits for around 2k damage on cloth.
Claw's Shout: Musel'ek will make Claw debuff the whole party so everybody has 75% of their armor decreased (you can avoid the MT getting this by tanking claw away from the rest of the group).
Claw's Charge: Musel'ek will make Claw charge a random person, this effect is just like a druids Feral Charge

Strategies

This fight is somewhat similar to the Illyanna Ravenoak encounter in Dire Maul and can be completed with a single tank. In order to do so the tank first runs up to Claw - the hunter's pet - after which he or she switches to the hunter himself. Once the tank has gained enough aggro (give him/her 3-4 seconds) the other party members can start to damage him aswell. Every once in a while Musel'ek will freeze the whole group and take some distance so he can shoot, it's important for the tank to get back in his melee range as soon as possible to keep him under control. Once the hunter is dead the group can focus on Claw, who will turn friendly around 20% health and expose himself as a druid.

NOTE: His pet, Claw, is part of the quest Lost in Action which can be obtained from a Night Elf in front of the entrance to the dungeon.

Addition: We just off-tanked the bear with a bear druid around the corner, never lost aggro to that charge. Once the tank has aggro, dps down. If he switches target, shield the new target immediately. He will do the AoE Frost Trap effect and then cast an Aimed Shot at that target.

Note: that you will be flagged with a PVP mark (if you are on a PvE server) if you damage the Swamplord. If you split tank your 2nd tank (the one tanking the bear) may end the fight with no PvP flag. May be important for Pally Buffs, and Auras to remind the 2nd tank to PvP toggle until the PvP buff wears off for the future fights.

The Black Stalker

Level 65 Elite, Beast

Attacks and Abilities

Static charge 500 damage per second
Levitate - Grabs and throws one player in the air, players can still cast spells during this time.
Chain Lightning - Stay spread out to avoid this, 3 second cast.

Strategy

Tank him in the center of the room with rest of party at max range a bit away from one another as chain lightning amplifies as it bounces off people much like the snake boss in ZG. If you get levitated remember that you can still cast, but it will assume you are moving until you reach maximum height, so use instant casts during that time. Mages can blink out of levitate and it seems like number two on the aggro list is the person that gets levitated most often. That's why it is wise to have a secondairy tank on the boss, to prevent the boss from attacking dps/healing classes. Although the priest should focus on healing the group, levitate is dispellable. Optionally, if you have a paladin in your group, he can focus on cleansing.

Healers; from what I learned from my own experience, is that The Black Stalker hits hard, so be prepared to cast much and strong heals. Melee dps can go near to dps only if they can properly go away as soon as the boss start his chain lightning. If they can't react properly is better if they stay far away. However, it's quite easy to do that, Chain lightning has a long casting time.

Like most other bosses in The Underbog, The Black Stalker has not much health, but hits hard. So a good balanced group is advised, especially at lower levels.

If you wipe on this boss, and you can get a rez class run out of the room to reset. The Black Stalker does path around the area he is in, so you can "ninja rez" people if you time it right but be wary of accepting rezzes until its clear. Its much faster than waiting for everyone to run back through the whole instance.

The Steamvault, mobs 70-72, 5 player

Hydromace Thespia

Level 72 Elite, Humanoid

Mekgineer Steamrigger

Level 72 Elite, Mechanical

Warlorld Kalithresh

Level 72 Elite, Humanoid

As the last boss of the max-level Coilfang wing, Kalithresh is an appropriately difficult and time-consuming fight. He is fought in a room lined with tanks, full of some unknown substance. The party must keep up steady DPS on him, as he has a fairly large amount of health, and he periodically reflects magic. His only other ability of note at this point is a randomly targeted Impale, which does 500 damage every 3 seconds. If he retargets someone before their Impale wears off, it will stack and refresh the duration, so healers must be paying attention.

However, every so often he shouts and begins to channel a spell to one of the tanks. At this point, the tank becomes targetable, and EVERYONE in the party must attack it. This includes healers, as he stops attacking while he channels this spell. It is imperative that the tank die to party damage before he finishes channeling. If he manages to get the spell off, he "enrages," increasing his attack speed by 100% and his damage by 75%. This ability will stack if more tanks are not destroyed. Since they are only targetable while he's channeling, there's a certain urgency to this fight. As long as the party manages to kill each tank before Kalithresh powers up from it, he will remain under control and easily handled.

Serpentshrine Cavern, 25 player raid

Attunement for Serepentshrine Cavern

In order for players to gain access to Serepentshrine Cavern players will need to defeat heroic mode Slave Pens. The quest requires you to defeat Gruul in Gruul's Lair and defeat Nightbane in Karazhan. After completion of the quest a spell will be cast upon you that lets you enter Serepentshrine Cavern.
